The Lebanese - politics divides them but Fairouz brings them together. For when she sings Lebanon unites:- The [Beqaa] valley [lit. plain] embraces the mountain and the south puts its arm around the waist of the north. No voice in the country of the cedar and oak rings out louder than the voice of Fairouz. Even the Lebanese differences which extend to all areas/parts become one when the compass of the discussion/debate points towards Fairouz. For Fairouz is the key to joy. [When] she sings the herds of worries move far away [and] the flocks of doves circle in the air. And if you want to put out the fires of dispute in Lebanon then turn the needle/pointer of the radio onto the voice of Fairouz. For there is not one Lebanese person who would rebel against listening to her voice. All raise aloft onto her the crown of the sultanate and emirate of art. Nizar Qabbani [Syrian poet d.1998] considered her a message of love from another planet Mahmoud Darwish [Palestinian poet d. 2008] said about her that she is who makes the desert smaller and the moon larger Ounsi el-Hajj [Lebanese poet b. 1937] said about her voice that it is like the clinking of ice in a glass and Saeed Aql [Lebanese poet b. 1912] described her as being our ambassador to the stars.

The Palestinian Prime Minister Dr. Salam Fayyad yesterday joined with olive pickers in their fields which are subjected to daily attacks on the part of settlers. And he sent from up an olive tree in the village of Iraq Burin near Nablus in the north of the West Bank a message to the settlers saying: Our message to them is that we will remain on our land - we will remain [on our land] just like the olive tree. The village of Iraq Burin is one of the Palestinian villages which are subjected to daily attacks by the settlers who uproot olive trees or cut them down or set fire to them or attack the farmers. [The village] was subjected yesterday to an attack by settlers who threw stones at the olive pickers and drove them from their land. However the farmers opposed them and there took place between the two sides clashes with stones.

Tiredness spread through his body and he began to suffer from fever and headache and from pain in the joints and from drowsiness and lethargy. He thought that the cause of his suffering was a cold or influenza and it would undoubtedly go within a few days with treatment or without treatment. But there hadnt passed [just] a few hours when his general condition deteriorated and he started complaining of various symptoms: Nausea vomiting behavioural and personality disturbances convulsions tremors mental confusion hallucination double vision the inability to control voluntary movement weakness of sensation in some regions of the body the inability to speak and a deterioration in alertness/consciousness. In light of this [lit. before this picture] the casualty was taken hurriedly to the nearest hospital and after carrying out the necessary examinations on him especially radiation/X-ray and laboratory [examinations] it became clear that he was suffering from an inflammation in the brain.

I have started getting fed up with the twenty first century and all who are in it wishing if only my Lord had created me and made me exist in the eighteenth century. That was the century full of romanticism where there were compassionate social relations which lovers would practise under the light of candles. And where there were the dances of the waltz and the kissing of the tips of fingers and the touching/striking of glasses. and duelling with swords to the death for the sake of winning a beautiful girl with braided hair and full breasts and rosy cheeks and who wore on her right foot a white shoe while her left foot was bare and naked like Cinderella who is my first and last love in both this world and the hereafter.

A young lawyer in the Egyptian city of Alexandria forgot the nature of his profession and changed under the tempation of quick wealth into an accused who runs the largest network for selling/distributing sexual stimulants which are forbidden from being circulated in Egypt. Officers of the Investigations [Directorate] were surprised on their heading to arrest the young lawyer that he was running a large network whose branches stretched to the majority of governorates and working in it were more than sixty distributors working eagerly in an intensive manner in the selling of these stimulants at exorbitant prices. The curious thing is that three of the lawyers customers and they are those who were present with him at the moment of his arrest were elderly one of them was seventy eight years of age and they all firmly refused to give evidence against him out [lit. from the door] of recognition of a favour/good turn and in gratitude for the services which he had rendered them over the two previous years during which he had practised [professionally] this trade!

A scene which is repeated in every street and alley; Dozens of children living in a cramped house which is not big enough [even] for five people and lacks water and electricity. Such is the life in many Iraqi towns. Ali in his sixth [year] of age is one of twenty one children from three families living in a house whose area is no more than one hundred and forty four metres [squared]. Every family lives in it [the house] inside a room which is not sufficient to hold the bodies of the young ones lying on small mattresses/foam mats the colours of which have disappeared with the passing of time. In a small corner of the entrance to the house there are piled up some empty water bottles which Alis family uses to meet its daily need of water while a small internal courtyard forms a kitchen in which has been placed a gas cylinder and a small cooker on top of whose surface are lumps of fat and dirt.

The town of Umm al-Fahm the second largest of the Arab towns in Israel turned into a point of contact between its Arab citizens and (between) the Israeli Police who were guarding a provocative march of extremist Jews from among the supporters of the racist Kehane movement. The clashes resulted in the arrest of Palestinian demonstrators and the injuring of some others in particular two Arab [parliamentary] representatives in the Knesset. And it coincided with the passing of a new racist law in the Knesset which allows small Jewish towns to prevent those who do not suit the social fabric of its inhabitants that is non-Jews from living in them. The controversial march which had obtained permission from the Police and the Israeli Supreme Court coincided with the twentieth anniversary of the killing of Rabbi Meir Kehane who was calling for the expulsion of the Arabs from Israel and the setting up of a Torahic state. At the same time organisers of the march said that it came in the context of calling for the banning of the Islamic Movement [i.e. Hamas].

At first glance [lit. instant] they remind you of the life of gypsies on the edges of cities and countries. For their life is constant travelling between one town and another. In every town they make a stop [lit. set down their saddlebags/baggage] they dont remain for more than two months after which they soon set out [lit. fasten their saddlebags/baggage] for another region. They dont own anything other than what helps them against the hardships of life and makes them able to continue in it [their life] without their asking for a helping hand from anyone. It is such that if someone passes by them he will think that they were Bedouins or [desert] Arabs as they resemble them in many ways - as regards the tent which gathers them under it the sheep and the birds which are around them and perhaps in what they wear in the way of clothes. But if you sit with them and get closer to them you will discover that they are nothing but a group of fellow men [lit. brothers] who inherited the profession of their father and grandfathers in tending sheep and cattle - a job which requires moving on and travelling in the search for grass and crops/vegetation in which they find the goal of their quest.

I dont know what the judgement on this is! Heres the story from the beginning: The authorities arrested one of the people and in his possession were [large] amounts of forged money. He defended himself with the following argument saying: I discovered these sums [of money] in a package thrown down/discarded in a dark corner in one of the stations and when I opened it I found it contained this money. So I went to the newspaper such-and-such and published the following announcement: There is with me a package containing a large amount of money and I am prepared to return it to its owner if he gives a correct description of what is in it. An entire full year had passed since that advertisement of mine. And when no-one had come forward to prove his right [to it] I considered it a found thing [which I could keep] from the [Islamic] legal side and I disposed/spent freely of it without knowing that that money was forged. So are those amounts considered lawful and [like] clear pure water on the heart of that man? Or must he receive the punishment?!

A grave mistake by a mother from the governorate of Ismailia (to the east of Cairo) resulted in the killing of her son. This was after she placed a foreign body/object from the remnants of war among a collection of wood which she was using to light her clay oven in order to make bread at her house which lies in one of the villages of the governorate. Security sources of the governorate of Ismailia reported that the initial examination of the body of the boy had revealed the existence of splinters/fragments in various areas of his body and that the death was due to the mother (unintentionally) putting an iron object from the remnants of war in the region inside the oven. And when this object was exposed to the high temperature it exploded and led to the killing of the boy and the injuring of his mother with light injuries. Mohammed Othman attorney/authorized representative of the office of the Prosecutor of Tel el-Kabir decided to assign the forensics [department] to inspect and perform an autopsy on the body.

Dawn on the fifth of last Ayloul (September) and as was her habit since the start of the month of Ramadan Hala Asila of the village of Araba in Galilee in the north of Palestine woke from her sleep and woke her four children to prepare for them the food of sahur [last meal before daybreak in Ramadan]. Hala did not know that she would not see the break of dawn after that day. Because all of a sudden [lit. unexpectedly] the neighbors heard screams coming out from her house. At that moment her husband was attacking/pouncing on her with a knife and slashing her body in the sight of her children. Hala was seven months pregnant. She worked as a teacher at a kindergarten in the village. All who knew her testified in her favour as to her good morals and giving [nature]. Her mother who had visited her at her house on the night of the happening of the crime testified: that there had not been showing on her daughter or her husband any signs of a fight between them. And no-one knows until now what happened in the house of Hala at that early hour.

The driver of the small taxi bus (minibus) could not bear the pressure of the fine resulting from his going the wrong way on the main road which came to 1500 [Egyptian] pounds [approx. USD250]. So he tried to escape from the pursuing traffic police. But the steering wheel became unbalanced/faulty in his hands and the bus fell into Ismailia Canal near Shubra el-Khaima north of Cairo and he drowned. But following the death of the driver Abdel Rahman Mahmoud (18 years old) at noon the day before yesterday there gathered in the evening hundreds of his relatives neighbours and friends at the Aboud taxi stand the largest stand for service taxis [i.e. shared taxis] and [regular] taxis in Egypt and then they cut off the road and prevented the movement of cars for more than two hours before the police were able to take control of the situation and break up the demonstrators. In an official statement the family of the driver accused a policeman of chasing/hounding their son after taking away his licence and vehicle which made him jump into the water in panic.

Street vendors [lit. travelling sellers] tourist guides poets or historians... They are the children who hone their skills and show them off to persuade the visitor to the Yemeni capital Sanaa that they deserve every penny he gives them. They spread out in tourist places; from Yemen Gate or Old Sanaa passing through Bous Castle in one of the mountains surrounding the Yemeni capital and arriving at Dar al-Hajar [=the Rock Palace] where was the residence of the Imam [Yahya d. AD 1948]. Likewise they are in the nearby parks of the suburb of Hadda (in which live the prosperous classes) carrying their rural products of eggs and fruit which they sell with [pre-] prepared poems for every person after asking him his name.

Some of the people who you meet in Rabat relate [the story] that the walls of one of the palaces present in the capital are bewitched and that the reason for this goes back to the fact that the wife of the owner of the palace brought the best magicians/sorcerers to write for her on the walls of the palace: amulets [here = words which create a barrier] riddles and many words and sentences connected with magic so that a woman other than her would not enter the palace and so that a woman other than her would not own the palace and so that a woman other than her would not gain control over the man. Despite this and according to the storytellers themselves her husband married many times other than her and the women who have entered the palace have no limit to their numbers or their names. However Morocco is well known for being the land of magic and there are many stories and folk tales and much expansive talk about the relationship of the Moroccans with magic and the relationship of magic with them.

On a scorching summer day at the height of the midday heat I went in on a bachelor friend in his apartment the doors of which are always open which [doors] don't have on them any locks like any agency without a doorman [i.e. a disorganized place where anyone can just walk in]. I found him laid out on the floor like a mangy/scabby camel and he was snoring in a deep slumber. It came to my attention that he had put his head on the floor while his big [lit. rough] feet were on the cushion or pillow. There was nothing for me to do except kick him to wake him up. And indeed he did wake up and I asked him about this strange method of his for sleeping. He said to me that he had been following this method for many years after he read that the peasants in Europe used to in the early part of the nineteenth century do that sleeping with their feet and not their heads being what were on the pillows in their belief that the feet were more than the heads in terms of suffering [i.e. feet suffered more than heads] in the day and they were what were more deserving than them [=heads] of rest.

The crisis of the increase in births in Egypt has spread from the world of humans to the world of lions. This is after the number of lions in the zoo in the city of Giza (south of the capital Cairo) reached one hundred and forty two lions something which prompted the management of the zoo to seek the help of the experience of a team of experts in the surgery of wild animals from South Africa to perform a number of surgical operations to sterilize four lions to prevent them from multiplying. This is after the zoo undertook during recent years the use of a number of methods for putting an end to the steady increase in the number of lions with including giving the female lions (lionesses) contraceptives to control this increase.

A young man from the city of Alexandria paid with his life as the price of his passionate [lit. violent] love of singing while showering/bathing. That was after spending too long under the running water to be electrocuted as a result of a defect in the electrical circuit of the boiler. The investigations of the office of the Prosecutor reported that the young man M. S. M from the city of Alexandria whose age was seventeen years old and who worked in the field of building/architecture had returned to his house after a hard days work. The young man insisted on showering/bathing despite the warning of his mother of damage to the electric boiler in their house and her saying to him that she had received a number of minor shocks because of a fault in its electric circuits. However the enthusiastic young man took no heed of the warnings of his mother and insisted on his position. The mother said in the investigations that she had heard the sound of a big crash in the bathroom and rushed as a result to investigate the matter... She broke into the bathroom to be shocked to find her son a lifeless corpse on the floor.

Every night the screens transmit to Jordanians scenes of the snow and rain falling heavily on the countries of Europe. And every night hope forms [lit. coalesces] in hearts that this water might head east to reach the sky of Jordan which has settled on a shining sun beaming in a clear blueness unfamiliar at the beginning of winter. Bit by bit fear rose in the hearts and throats muttered about it. Then the sound of talk rang out about fears of a drought (in a country which relies totally on rain) along with what accompanies it in terms of damage to crops and the spread of disease in addition to the lack of drinking water in one of the poorest of countries in terms of water resources.

If you pass by the town of Jezzine dubbed the Bride of the South then for sure you will be stopped by the windows [lit. facades] of the shops specialized in the selling of Jezzine gifts which comprise silver spoons knives and forks with an ivory handle and inlaid with pure gold sometimes which accompany fine/luxurious table settings. This industry is considered the source of income/livelihood for half the inhabitants of the town whose number does not exceed forty thousand people distributed over an area of no more than two thousand and twenty hectares. The professionals of this daily trade compete in creating/inventing the shapes and drawings and decoration which adorn the handles made sometimes from the horns of animals or their bones and they take the shape of a peacock or [small] bird or fish or goose and other [creatures] and are colored/stained with different colors such as blue or burgundy [lit. wine] or gold and other [colors] to match the different plates/dishes set out on the tables.

The Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir announced yesterday the consolidating [lit. strengthening] of the implementation of Islamic Sharia law in the country for it to become the main source of the Sudanese constitution if the South chooses to separate in the referendum of the ninth of this coming January (Kanun Ith~thaanii). The Sudanese President said in a speech he gave in the town of Qadarif in the east of Sudan: If the South chooses to separate the constitution of Sudan will be amended and then there will be no place/scope/room for talking about ethnic/racial and cultural diversity and it will be Islam that is the main source of legislation. He also confirmed that the official language of the state will be Arabic. It will be up to the inhabitants of the South of Sudan to choose between staying in a unified Sudan or separating in a referendum organized for this coming ninth of January. This referendum was the main article in the peace agreement which at the end of 2005 put an end to more than two decades of bloody civil war between the North and South.

After thirty years since its implementation during which it was subjected to a great number of criticisms in the labor market the United Arab Emirates has abolished the system of transfer of sponsorship which prohibited the worker in the private sector from moving from one company to another without obtaining the agreement/consent of the original employer while some see it as a prelude to abolishing the sponsor system entirely in the state of the Emirates in the same way as was done by Bahrain which abolished the sponsor system for the foreign workforce. The resolution makes it obligatory to grant the new permit to the employee after ending his working relationship with the employer to move from one establishment to another without adhering to the period of six months which was calculated from the date of cancelling the work card. Saqr Ghobash the Emirati Minister of Labor said: The new measures are based entirely on working/striving towards creating more flexibility in the labor market and a balance in the contractual relationship between the employer and employee.

The fatwa [=formal legal opinion (Isl. law)] of Dr. Ali Gomaa [Grand] Mufti of Egypt [lit. Egyptian lands/localities] allowing the use of the heart valve taken from a pig in open-heart operations caused heated [lit. widespread] discussion among the `ulema [lit. scholars] of al-Azhar as some considered that the transferring of the heart of a pig to a human is not lawful/permitted relying [for this opinion] on the fact that all [lit. multitude] the `ulema were unanimously agreed on the uncleanliness of the pig and that its saliva nasal mucous sweat and blood and what is taken from its heart or from its veins or from its organs are [all] forbidden. Whereas some others supported the fatwa of Dr. Gomaa relying [for this opinion] on the jurisprudential principle of necessities permitting forbidden things. They agreed on the fact that treatment/medication in this case is of the standing/rank of necessity so in [this treatment] it is permissible to receive the forbidden. This is based on what some of the Hanafi [school of Islamic law] believe and what is stated with certainty by all the Shafii [school of Islamic law].

One of the tramcars in the city of Alexandria was the cause yesterday morning behind the stirring up of the panic of the citizens after they were surprised by its not stopping at the designated passenger stop and its crossing a road intersection at great speed in an area which sees high traffic density which resulted in its colliding with a number of cars and led to the occurrence of the total paralysis of the movement of traffic in the center of the city for more than two hours. It became clear to the police [lit. security men] that the driver of the tram was moving at great speed which did not allow him to have control over the brakes of the streetcar/locomotive which led to [his] not stopping in the designated place in the station/stop and he went through a road intersection at a time when the priority of movement was for cars coming from the perpendicular road for him to collide with five of these cars causing great damage to them.
